I think I love your house too. And thank you for the dose of realism. IMO, houses shouldn’t look as if no one lives there and they should be filled with things you love, not things we think will photograph well.
I chortled the whole time reading this. I love the intricate explanations behind each pile of shit and the cast of characters in your family. It’s the kind of stuff that is so real that one could never even make it up. I’m still deciding what to do with our shit piles. I have a new baby who is a month old, a husband who has five bikes and endless bike parts, a feral cat who is always hungry, and another clueless cat who unfortunately always gets throttled by the first cat. Life is good and I love our apartment that we don’t own! Hoping home ownership is up next, although I am wary of what I wish for
The bikes!!! We have TEN BIKES and I only own three of them! Boxes and boxes of useless bike parts and bike accessories I've been trying to get him to sell for YEARS. God I feel that.
I laughed (I'm sorry) the whole time reading this but I just love your writing so much. And even though I know nothing, just like everyone says, things will come together just in time.
Looks like you’re more than ready for kids. Lol Kids=chaos, but seriously, all will work out, what gets done gets done and by May you will be wondering how it all got done. Remember the in between is where the magic happens. All the best in this wonderful next chapter. xo
It's so nice seeing someones real house, I am hoping to get my own house at some point and its so nice to see someones house which looks lived in, not just presented for instagram :D
I love seeing the in-between shots of turning the before into the after, and as a fellow embracer of chaos (I mean this in the nicest, kindest, most supportive way), thank you for sharing yours with all of us.
That during purgatory is what I like to call living. I eventually get to the after, but there are so many side quests and other fun things to do during the during.
In Mediterranean climates pottery shards are often used to cap the soil in contained plants. They readily admit water, but cut down on evaporation, reflect intense summer heat and reduce weeds. They’re heavy/hard enough that cats don’t want to move them and dogs are unlikely to chew on.
The cats will find something else to fuck with, no doubt…
I wholeheartedly admire your thoroughness in repurposing items. I get compulsive about it when there really isn’t time.
This is not the time to start a Danish style resource center, but is it possible to just put a FREE list up on a community billboard? I’m urban and a FREE sign or a quick Craigslist FREE listing makes things magically disappear!
Beautiful giant rooms, certainly no ‘cabin’. Your kitchen redo is really great. I bet there’s a good story about rehoming the sombrero.
One of Snoop’s 19 crimes certainly was bottling that plonk…
We started replacing with pottery shards! I love that! And thankfully the cats leave them alone so long as they're big enough. If they're too small, they just shove them out of the way.
And unfortunately we live a little too far out for posting about free stuff unless it's like, skis or furniture.
Cats naturally “do their business” (haven’t we all had shit jobs? 😸) in natural soil. Humans can actually access natural anti-depressants from it too.
What would happen if there was a dish of soil somewhere that they could mess with, without harming the houseplants? My two passed in 2020, or I would perform the experiment myself.
You know, we toyed with this, but found that letting them play with some dirt convinced them they could play with all dirt. So we've just upped the other fun - climbing, toys, etc. Plus, they get supervised+harnessed outdoor time when the melt comes.
Ah so you did the experiment! Furthering science. Well done you!
I can’t wait for melt time either. I know to hope that it hangs on (I don’t live at elevation, just find my nirvana there) per water accumulation and wildfires, but it is a glorious event.
Well the cats, even when they roam, sleep in the bedroom, so we didn’t want to lock them out and make Jibs territorial over the bed. But I suspect if we *did* lock them out, Jibs would still lose his mind hearing them upstairs. He’s very sound reactive, but it’s getting better the more time he has to get used to the sounds.
You may have already tried this but Maddie went through a phase where she was very sound reactive and I talked to a trainer to learn how to "work on" this and she was like "have you tried using a white noise machine" and while I was doubtful, it basically fixed the problem overnight.
I live with four dogs, a bird, and a housemate with a very painful very broken foot — plus a very teenage magpie who’s decided he’d like to come inside our house at least once a day. I found bird poop on my bed the other day 😂😅🙃 ‘Warm chaos’ is how an old friend described it.
Happy nesting! The little birdling will have a wonderfully cozy place to come home to. And thank you for generously sharing all the photos of your family nest. It makes you even more "real" to me . . . I live in a Colorado log home myself and it is always in a state of transition (aka utter chaos), so I love seeing others' places and gathering inspiration.
Not gonna lie, these photos made me a little anxious, but I can definitely see past the during phase to the after phase, and it's going to be so good! The log walls and beams and floors are beautiful. Is that a little stone wall in the basement bedroom? Anyway, this looks like a cozy, fun place to make a nest, and it's already gorgeous (uhm, hello, kitchen backsplash?! the kitchen in general is awesome)!
My gift to my husband for his first Father’s Day was moving the piles to crap that were on the fireplace. I did it… and can safely say it took about 8 months for those to accumulate again.
Thanks for the tour. I love your house. I was just at a friend's cabin in the mountains of Arizona last weekend, surrounded by pine trees and elk and amazing weather. I find myself longing for more mountain life now.
I think I love your house too. And thank you for the dose of realism. IMO, houses shouldn’t look as if no one lives there and they should be filled with things you love, not things we think will photograph well.
Agreed. 💗

You and Kelton are both Circus Directors: in invisible high hats, cutaways and stylish whips. 🎩 🐆🐅🐈🐈⬛
Real peoples homes are vastly more fun than the ghastly catalogs on sites like Apartment Therapy…
Shit piles are forever; we can even “style” them! 😄

Desperately trying to remember that and not just be resentful I’m in pain for most of it 🫠
It's so nice seeing someones real house, I am hoping to get my own house at some point and its so nice to see someones house which looks lived in, not just presented for instagram :D
🙏🏼💞
I, too, wish to ride the wave of my husband’s confidence to eternity!
😂😂

This made me wonder…

Curiosity calmed the cat.

Wait. Would it work for Jibs to stay in the bedroom while the cats roam the house? Or he would still growl?
Also i LOLd: “About two weeks ago, Ben was like “we have to stop leaving shit all over the bar.” And so we started leaving shit on the bar stools.”
cause same except with the dining room chairs. Out of sight out of mind baby!

Wow amazing - just need to convince Ben lol
all the parents are using white noise for their babies so why not start early - lol
I loved this piece, thank you Kelton 💛

A MAGPIE? I am so envious!!
It is actually pretty great. Chaos, but great 😅

Lol, same.
Moving the junk onto the barstools 😂

Stinky Linky? More like Stinky Leaky!!!!
He’s a never ending mystery

and perhaps a Boston Terrier again...after 18 months with no dog. We shall see.
