Sorry, I am mostly furious at your medical center after reading that. They made you drive, I'm assuming, at least a couple hours round-trip to get an easily emailed and purely informational note? When they are presumably aware that you are still recovering from birth, caring for a 5 month old, and maybe have other things to do in your life? Guys.

As someone who ran a local medical center in our area for 11 years, it's because of HIPPA. You can't legally email anything with PHI in it as the risk of MILLIONS in fines if you get caught. Larger hospital systems pay for email encryption systems to get around that, but small town clinics don't tend to have the funds or the staff to implement that (at least not yet). Yes, it's a total pain - both for the patients AND for the staff who get yelled at for the inconvenience. Hoping that eases your fury a bit to understand the "why" of the frustrating request to pick up the letter in person. (or it can be mailed to you if you have enough time to wait for it to arrive snail mail)

thankfully it's also a pleasant stop

Ahhhh. Okay -- my neurologist (in a city hospital) has sent me various permission notes through the hospital portal many times over the years (I need a letter to travel with the meds I take in case TSA ever has a problem) so I am used to notes-from-the-doctor being a very simple electronic process.

That was lovely and gave me a tiny tiny sense of your life right now.

A real text to a friend yesterday “I genuinely get giddy when a shangrilogs essay appears in my inbox”. She agreed and this one did not disappoint. Read it in bed while tending to my 4 month old. Thank you.

This was a fun read. :) Reminds me of the first time we took our kids rafting (and camping) when they were 18 months and 2.5 years (and had our dog in tow). Overall very fun, except for the parts where the 18 month old screamed every time he had to wear his PFD and the 2.5 year old wet the bed so we all woke up soaked in urine in our camping bags. We had done E to D just north of us, so still close to home but very much an adventure with littles in tow. Love that y'all were able to make this trip happen!

This was beautiful! The style was also reminding me of Ducks Newburyport which is a stream of consciousness book with repetitive phrases.

Fair warning, it's a massive book with one very very long run-on sentence

You seem at peace with the constant interruptions and redirections. I like how this is conveyed through the written style

Attending a Dependent Diary

My camper van got destroyed by vermin (dropped from a tree into a disintegrating replacement skylight…). I sure miss it! Having a lockable rolling ‘house’ is just so peachy for travel. There’s comfort in having all the kit you need ready to use all the time.

That’s another really lucky kid to be raised in a camping positive environment. Of all the artistic and thrilling educational opportunities I got, camping most made me into who I am today. THE Happy Camper!

So happy for you all! Sweet spot too.
